Adapting to the Season of Spring: Kapha Energy and Ayurveda

Spring is here! This is the magical time of rebirth and renewing. We see this in the budding trees, sprouting plants, and heavily flowing rivers. We can also see this within ourselves; in body, mind, and spirit. This is a time to freshen up, in all aspects of our lives.
Ayurveda is the traditional healing system of India, over 5,000 years old. It is based on the Five Element theory, that everything in the universe is made up of Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth, in different proportions. These elements come together to form the three Doshas, which can be translated to biological humors or energies. These Doshas are Vata (a combination of Ether and Air), Pitta (Fire/Water), and Kapha (Water/Earth).
Ayurveda brings light to our connection to every single thing in the universe. It teaches that everything that happens within nature, and even the cosmos, is connected and is occurring within our bodies as well. As living beings, we are considered the “microcosm in the macrocosm.”
Ayurveda also teaches the very profound cycles of life. One of these cycles is the change of season. If we pay attention, we may notice that our bodies feel differently from season to season. We may enjoy curling up by the fire with a book in the winter, while being more social in the summertime. We may crave different foods, depending on the time of year. According to Ayurveda, our diet and lifestyle should change along with the seasons.
Kapha season is upon us. We can feel this in the moist air and cool temperatures. We may also feel this in our bodies, perhaps feeling more congested and lethargic. According to Ayurveda, this is a time to focus on lightening up. This doesn't necessarily mean “losing weight,” but a time to lighten the food we put into our body, activities we do, and freshening our mind/spirit.
To remedy the possible imbalances that may come along in the change into spring, Ayurveda looks at diet and lifestyle. Ayurveda goes along with the rhythms of nature, so seasonal foods are very important. What would our ancestors, those who truly lived off the land, eat? Here is a list of kapha-pacifying foods that can be incorporated into your diet, along with foods to avoid this time of year:

Foods to Favor:
  • Dried fruit
  • Astringent fruit
  • Alfalfa sprouts, other sprouts and shoots
  • Asparagus, Bell peppers
  • Barley, Buckwheat
  • Corn
  • Beans
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Ghee, sunflower, and almond oil (in moderation)
  • Raw honey (in moderation)
  • Warming spices such as ginger, black pepper, cayenne, horseradish
  • Ginger tea with lemon and honey
Foods to Limit/Avoid:
  • Sweet fruit, such as bananas
  • Cucumber, Eggplant, Squash, Tomatoes
  • Oats, wheat
  • Tofu
  • Dairy products
  • Sweeteners (other than honey)
  • Pickles
  • Mayonnaise
  • Soy sauce
  • Ketchup
  • Most meats
  • Cold or frozen foods
  • Iced/chilled drinks
Lifestyle is another very important role in bringing balance. During Kapha season, Ayurveda suggests choosing a routine that lightens and refreshes. Some things that can be done to balance the heaviness of this time of year are as follows:
  • Wake before or at sunrise.
  • Incorporate daily exercise, preferably before 10:00 am. Vigorous exercise is good this time of year.
  • Avoid napping during the day, move your body if you need some energy!
  • Make lunch the biggest meal of the day. Try making breakfast and dinner lighter this time of year.
  • If you practice yoga, perhaps try a more vigorous routine.
  • Avoid sleeping more than 8 hours at night.
  • Take a walk or hike in the woods, or along the river. It's beautiful out there!
Spring is a time to contemplate ridding ourselves of what no longer serves us. Perhaps there are old habits or routines that are inhibiting us from being our best self. Perhaps we feel stuck in our situation. This is a beautiful time to consider these things and make necessary changes in our lives for the better! If we pay attention, we will start to do what feels natural during any season; and we will strengthen our connection to all that is around us.

Dean goes into detail about how many medications and lifestyle factors can rob our bodies of this essential mineral and how one can replace and maintain one's magnesium by supplementation and diet. Definitely worth the read!
